During our two month stay in Shanghai, we were on a mission to find and eat the best noodles in Shanghai, China. A good bowl of noodles is like a warm hug, and let’s just say we had a lot of warm hugs in Shanghai. There was something about being in Shanghai over winter, walking past steamy windows and finding refuge in a little noodle shop. If you’re planning a trip to Shanghai and want to do the same, here are our absolute favourite picks for the best noodles in Shanghai China.

Wei Xiang Zhai
Wei Xiang Zhai is an iconic noodle shop in Shanghai, perhaps best known for their spicy sesame noodle dish, ma jiang mian. We couldn’t wait to try this dish.
As you walk in, there is a counter on your left where you place your order. We ordered ma jiang mian and a beef curry broth. Pay here and take your receipt, find a place to sit, most likely sharing with others, and someone will come and take your receipt and bring your dish to your table. Or at least that’s what our experience was.
When the majiang mian arrives the sesame sauce is draped across the top of the noodles, and what looks and tastes like a chilli oil is on the side. Mix it all together and eat it sooner rather than later as it becomes gluggy as time passes. I loved the first two-thirds of my dish and then found it pretty filling and harder to finish. But Chris managed to finish his and mine with no trouble.

Chuan Noodles
Chuan Noodles, also known as Liu Dao Men or Liu Tang Men, has to be our absolute favourite noodle shop in Shanghai. We went here a few times, and unfortunately only discovered it towards the end of our two months in Shanghai, otherwise, we would have come here every week.
Chuan Noodles is a nice casual local restaurant that has some of the best noodles in Shanghai, China. Here, they actually serve Sichuan food.
We absolutely loved the Dan Dan Noodles (担担面), a spicy Sichuan pepper noodle dish with pork and many other delicious things. But the stand out noodle dish was the tian shui mian (甜水面), or on the English menu, brown sugar noodles, although I believe it literally translates to sweet water noodles. This was unlike any other noodle dish we have ever tried. These thick chewy noodles are hand made and cut with textured edges. They come with a sweet and spicy sauce made from Sichuan peppercorns, chilli, sugar and a sprinkling of peanuts amongst other things. We had read that you cannot get these noodles before 1.30 pm.
Both the noodle dishes came in quite small serves. We also loved many other dishes here including the braised beef noodle (dry) and the yibin burning noodle too.

319 Noodle House
319 Noodle House is an unassuming noodle shop in Shanghai. We loved sitting near the window, looking out at the people passing by, whilst slurping up a bowl of deliciousness.
We devoured bowls of scallion oil noodles and là ròu miàn (辣肉面), otherwise known as pork noodles. Both of these were full of flavour and love. We really enjoyed our time at 319 Noodle House.

Jian Guo 328
We weren’t staying too far from Jianguo 328 so made our way here a few times. It’s a cute little casual restaurant that always seems to be full of people, conversations and amazing food. You can get a range of delicious dishes here. Some that we loved included plates of sauteed broccoli with garlic (32 Yuan), deep-fried spare rib with spices (42 Yuan) and Shanghai fried rice (28 Yuan). But of course, they also did an amazing bowl of scallion oil noodles (Cong You Ban Mian 葱油拌面 – 18 Yuan). Scallion oil noodles is a simple dish but extremely comforting. It’s essentially made with noodles, scallions, oil, soy sauce and sugar. Getting a mouthful of noodles with the crispy scallions is probably my favourite part.
Jianguo 328 is pretty busy so you may need a reservation, but we never made one and managed. Jianguo 328 are also known for not using any MSG.

Ding Te Le
This a small, casual 24-hour restaurant located down an alley off a busy road. We had heard great things about their noodle dishes and deep-fried pork chop, so that’s exactly what we got. The pork chop, albeit a little dry, still had a lot of flavour. We tried the scallion and pork noodle dish, which at first appeared a little bland as even after mixing some noodles didn’t have much sauce, but a few bites in, every mouthful with pork and scallions was full of flavour.
All in all, we enjoyed our meals but would mainly recommend it if you have more time in Shanghai or need a meal at odd hours, just because there are so many iconic dishes to try during your visit to Shanghai.

Henan La Mian
Henan La Mian is a tiny casual noodle shop on Changle Road.
Here we had stir-fry noodles with beef which was quite nice. The noodles themselves were great. We also saw that they did Shanghai fried pork chop which is served with vinegar, so we gave it a try too. Although we love the concept, it wasn’t our favourite version.
They are also known here for their scallion noodles (cōngyóu bànmiàn 葱油拌面).

We also loved one of our local noodle shops located on 153 Guangyuan Road, but we are unsure of the name so will just include a photo here. They did a delicious beef noodle soup.
One of our favourite places to have scallion oil noodles was at Old Jesse restaurant. But as it is more of a restaurant and there are many other dishes to get there, we will focus on it more in our ‘where to eat in Shanghai’ article.
And then we have the ones we didn’t get to try but looked great:
