Where To Stay In Hobart? Neighbourhood Guide
Wondering what’s the best area to stay in Hobart? If it’s your first visit, we think it’s best to stay in Central Hobart, so you can easily walk to most places. This includes areas like Hobart CBD, Salamanca, and Battery Point. These are also the best areas to stay in Hobart without a car, as most things are within a short walk.
If it’s your second visit or you have a car, Sandy Bay is another option. Sandy Bay is just south of Battery Point and is home to a few beaches. Another area, North Hobart is home to some great cafes and restaurants, but it’s too far to walk to the waterfront, which is somewhere I think you’ll want to spend a lot of time during your visit. Both of these areas are best if you’re visiting Hobart with a car.
CBD, Salamanca & Battery Point
Hobart Central Business District, Salamanca & Battery Point are the best areas to stay in Hobart for almost all visitors. They are great areas for first-time visitors, families, couples, and those visiting without a car. It’s also where you will find most of the waterfront accommodation.
There are plenty of things to do in the CBD. Walk around and see all of the beautiful heritage buildings and Hobart’s waterfront (the River Derwent), visit St David’s Cathedral, walk through Franklin Square, or explore Farm Gate Market on Sundays. Enjoy coffee at one of the many coffee shops and cafes, try pastries from Pigeon Whole Bakers, and dinner at ‘In The Hanging Garden’ or ‘Urban Greek’. This area is also home to the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery and Theatre Royal. If that’s not enough, you can take the ferry to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) from here, or the explorer bus to Mount Wellington. All these activities will be within easy access of your hotel when staying in the city center.
Salamanca is at one end of the beautiful waterfront, a very central location. It’s home to the iconic Salamanca Market on Saturdays. You can also see the beautiful Georgian sandstone warehouses from the 1830s that line Salamanca Place. Pop into Salamanca Square for a coffee at Parklane Espresso or enjoy a meal at delicious restaurants like Farzi and Ti Ama. You can even experience the Heritage Horse Drawn Carriages ride. It’s also within walking distance to all of the attractions and restaurants listed above in the CBD.
Battery Point sits just behind Salamanca and is a historic gem. Follow a self-guided historic walk around the area (we loved ‘In Bobby’s Footsteps) seeing places like Narryna House and Arthurs Circus. Stop for a scallop pie at Jackman & McRoss Bakery. And wander through Princes Park for some tranquillity. Battery Point is more of a residential area with some shops and restaurants.

Hobart may be a small city but it’s full of incredible things to do. We spent 5 nights (4.5 days) here and it was a great amount of time to experience some of the best things to do in Hobart.
If it’s your first time visiting, we think 4 to 5 nights is a nice length. Having said this, it’s worth the visit even if you only have two nights.
