Rhodes was our first stop in Greece, and it did not disappoint. It was here that we first discovered the Greek sweet… Loukoumades. Basically it’s kind of like a greek doughnut, usually topped with honey, cinnamon and walnuts, but also has a chocolate topping alternative. Walking through a little back street in Rhodes, a delicious smell was coming from this cute corner shop… and there began my obsession with loukoumades. After I tried them, I went back as many times as I could, just in case they didn’t exist anywhere else in Greece :) Perfect way to end a meal or as an afternoon snack! When we got home from our Greece trip, we were craving delicious loukoumades and decided to make them ourselves. They actually turned out really well, we had ours with a chocolate topping and loved them. Loukoumades Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup of warm water
- 2 x sachets of dry yeast (about 15grams)
- 1 cup of warm milk
- 4 tablespoons of olive oil
- 3 1/4 cups of flour
- A good pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 200g of dark chocolate
How To Make
- Combine yeast and water in a large bowl, then stand for 5 minutes.
- Add milk, flour, oil, salt, sugar
- Mix on high speed until combined
- Cover and leave at room temperature for at least 1 hour
- Heat vegetable oil in pan (high heat)
- Use a spoon and the palm of your hand (wet) to form small balls of dough, then place in oil
- Cook until golden
For the chocolate topping:
- Place chocolate in a double boiler to melt
- Pour chocolate over loukoumades
