The food we experienced in Munich was delicious and hearty, so make sure you prepare yourself for the giant-sized portions. Munich is part of the Bavaria region, so you will undoubtedly be wanting to try the best Bavarian food during your stay. They are of course, also famous for their beer gardens too. Here is our Munich food guide with our favourite picks for where to eat in Munich Germany, including restaurants, cafes, beer gardens, and desserts.
Best Restaurants in Munich
Andy’s Kablegarten
If you’re looking to taste one of the best schnitzels in Munich, then Andy’s Kablegarten is somewhere you should visit. You can sit inside or outside in their beautiful garden. They have more than just schnitzel on the menu, but I’d definitely recommend you try at least one schnitzel. There are a lot of different choices, we went with the special schnitzel, which was with horseradish and mustard, and the obatzter schnitzel, which was with Bavarian cheese. We quite liked the potato and cucumber salad to go with the schnitzel too. One of the best places to eat in Munich to try a delicious Schnitzel.
Thalkirchner Straße 2, München
Every day from 10 AM to 12 AM
Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger
A centrally located restaurant and beer garden. Here you can come for lunch or dinner, but the lunch menu has some great options and offers great value for money. We paid about 8 Euro for each lunch dish. We loved the roast pork lunch special, and the apple strudel is delicious.
Blumenstraße 5, München
Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 1 AM + Sunday from 11 AM to 11 PM
Wirtshaus In Der Au
This was our favourite restaurant in Munich, with great food and atmosphere. You could sit outside which is great in summer, or you can sit inside where it feels warm and cosy with candles on the table. We loved the roast duck with (giant) potato dumpling and a cinnamon flavoured cabbage and the Wirtshaus special Knodel dish. We also loved their house brewed Kraft Bier. For dessert, we tried the Apfelschmarrn, which is like a sliced pancake with apples and vanilla and cranberry sauce. Wirtshaus In Der Au is our pick for where to eat in Munich for an authentic and delicious food.
Lilienstraße 51, München
Monday to Friday from 5 PM to 11 PM + Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 11 PM
Beer Halls & Beer Gardens in Munich
Hirschgarten
Hirschgarten is the largest beer garden in Munich. This beer garden is set within a park with deer and greenery and people riding bikes. There are so many seats and people here, it has such a lovely atmosphere. You can order and collect your food and beer and then find a seat, or you can sit in the service area where you can enjoy table service. By the time we arrived we had already had such a huge lunch, it was hard to think about eating again, but we still managed to share a roast pork knuckle (we had a half portion which was still big) and a giant pretzel. Other food available here is spare ribs, roast chicken, wurst, fish and other sides and salads. There are also quite a few beer stands to order your beer from. The beer garden felt like a traditional, local experience, with people of all ages enjoying the summer evening. Hirschgarten is our pick for where to eat in Munich for a local beer garden experience.
Hirschgarten 1, 80639 München
Every Day from 11 AM to 12 AM
Hofbräuhaus
One of the most well-known beer halls in Munich. It attracts a lot of tourists and may not give you a very local experience, but it’s definitely worth checking out and there is still a clear local crowd here too. You can eat some traditional dishes here or pop by for a drink and head elsewhere to eat. I would definitely make sure to visit another beer hall or beer garden for a more local experience, but you will definitely find a lot of history here.
Platzl 9, München
Every Day from 9 AM to 12 AM
Coffee & Cafes In Munich
Man Versus Machine
A great coffee shop with a few seats and nice design. The perfect place to get your coffee in Munich, especially if you’re looking for a good flat white. They are coffee roasters and you can buy some fresh beans in the cafe too.
Müllerstraße 23, München

Kaffeerösterei Viktualienmarkt
A beautiful little cafe in the Viktualienmarkt. If you’re craving a chai latte, Kaffeerösterei does a really nice one. The spices are nice and strong enough in flavour without being overpowering, and it’s beautiful and frothy. If anything, slightly on the sweet side. They also have fresh roasted organic coffee here too.

Cafe Frischhut is right across the road from the Viktualienmarkt. This traditional cafe serves delicious Schmalznudel, which is like a fried doughnut and tastes great with some sugar sprinkled on top. Come here for breakfast or a snack, we found ourselves here a few mornings.

Bergwolf
If you are interested in trying currywurst, a curry sausage dish, then Bergwolf is a good choice. It has a bit of a dive bar feel, and its a common place for people to come after a big night out. So don’t have expectations of a traditional restaurant or a fancy dish in mind and you will enjoy. We had a currywurst with fries and ketchup, mayonnaise and onion. It was a yummy dish to try but after you finish the entire thing it feels like you need to detox.
