Where To Stay In Munich? Munich Neighbourhood Guide
So where to stay in Munich? Munich has so many beautiful neighbourhoods that each offer something different. For a first time visit, you will most likely want to stay central, and obviously, the Altstadt, or Munich’s Old Town, is a great option. But there are some great central neighbourhoods that might offer more value for money as well as a local feel too. Neighbourhoods such as Maxvorstadt, Ludwigsvorstadt, Isarvorstadt and Haidhausen are still quite central and are all great picks for where to stay in Munich. A little bit further from the Old Town but still great choices for where to stay in Munich are Schwabing and Neuhausen-Nymphenburg.
Although staying in Munich city centre is convenient, hotels in Munich can be expensive. If you’re after more value for money, you can look at Munich neighbourhoods that are well connected by public transport to Munich Old Town. There are lots of great options that can also get you into the city centre within 10-20 minutes. Otherwise, try and book as early as possible for more options.
Munich Neighbourhood Map
Here is our map of Munich neighbourhoods with attractions.
Altstadt-Lehel/Marienplatz
Altstadt-Lehel is Munich’s Old Town and the city centre of Munich. Here you will find beautiful historic architecture, some of Munich’s best attractions, lots of restaurants and bars, shopping and a lively atmosphere. Marienplatz is the main square of the Old Town. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Munich Old Town.
Maxvorstadt
Just north Of Munich Old Town is the neighbourhood of Maxvorstadt. This area is known for its many art galleries, museums and universities. From Maxvorstadt you can still walk to the Old Town and most Munich attractions. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Maxvorstadt.
Schwabing
Neighbouring Maxvorstadt and home to the English Garden is Schwabing. This is a beautiful residential neighbourhood known for the artists and writers that once chose to live here. It also has many cafes, restaurants and bars and is in a central location. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Schwabing.
Ludwigsvorstadt
This area is just south of Munich’s main train station, Munich Hauptbahnhof. It is quite central, especially if visiting during Oktoberfest, as this is where it is held. Ludwigsvorstadt is where to stay in Munich for Oktoberfest. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Ludwigsvorstadt.
Isarvorstadt (Gärtnerplatz-Glockenbach)
Isarvorstadt is an area along the Isar river, just south of Munich Old Town. If you’re looking for cool places to stay in Munich, then Isarvorstadt is a great option. It is a bit of a trendy neighbourhood also known for its nightlife. It’s a beautiful area, also known for the two smaller neighbourhoods within it, Glockenbach and Gärtnerplatz. Glokenbach is a lively area with plenty of nightlife options, also known as the centre of Munich’s Gay and Lesbian scene. Gärtnerplatz is a beautiful square surrounded by cafes and bars and the well-known theatre and opera house, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Isarvorstadt.
Au-Haidhausen
Au-Haidhausen is known as the ‘French Quarter’ of Munich. It lines the Isar river and is home to some great cafes and restaurants. Au-Haidhausen has a mix of quiet residential areas with some parts that are known for their nightlife too. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Au-Haidhausen.
Neuhausen-Nymphenburg
This beautiful residential neighbourhood in Munich is a little further away from Munich’s city centre, although the Old Town can be reached within 10-20 minutes on public transport. This area is home to Nymphenburg Palace and Hirschgarten, a beautiful park and the largest beer garden in the city. It’s one of the best areas to stay in Munich if you’re looking for an Airbnb and a great option for where to stay in Munich with family. See our Munich accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg.
How Long To Stay In Munich Germany?
Munich is a vibrant city in Germany with many options for Munich day trips. So to decide how long to stay in Munich, it will depend on your Europe Itinerary and if you use Munich as a base for anywhere else.
We stayed in Munich for 4 nights and 4 full days and found this was a great amount of time. There are a lot of things to see in Munich and some sights take quite a while. We spent almost half a day at Nymphenburg Palace and Park and Munich Residence is so large it takes a couple of hours just to walk through it. And then there are things in Munich that you want to relax whilst doing them, like visiting a beer garden or wandering the streets and exploring the different neighbourhoods.
So 4 full days in Munich felt like a great amount of time to spend there, if you wanted to do less, then maybe 3 days in Munich would be a nice length. But if you want to add day trips to your time in Munich, then you would obviously add a day for each. From Munich, you can visit Salzburg, Neuschwanstein Castle, Dachau concentration camp, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Berchtesgaden and many more places.
