The Best Areas To Stay In Prague For A First Time Trip
So what is the best neighbourhood to stay in Prague? For your first trip to Prague, you will probably want something beautiful, historic and central. Here are our favourite picks for where to stay in Prague for a first visit…
Prague Old Town (Stare Mesto and Josefov) – Prague 1
Staying in Prague 1, in particular, Prague Old Town (Stare Mesto + Josefov) is the most central place to stay in Prague. Here you have so many sights within easy walking distance, such as Prague’s Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and the Jewish Quarter. You will also have beautiful architecture and cobblestone streets. There is a lot going on in the Old Town, and it has a lively atmosphere at night with restaurants and bars. On the downside, it’s the most touristy area of Prague, so it will be busy and you won’t get a local feel. Nevertheless, staying in Prague Old Town is a great option for your first trip to Prague. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Prague Old Town.
Prague New Town (Nove Mesto) – Prague 1 + 2
Prague New Town (Nove Mesto), spreads across Prague 1 + 2 districts. It’s also a central area to stay in Prague. Most attractions can be reached on foot from here, and the transport system is great. It is a popular area for shopping and a good choice for where to stay in Prague for nightlife (also great for nightlife is Žižkov). Having said that, the area around Wenceslas Square is perhaps one of the Prague areas to avoid at night, as it can become a bit seedy, but not necessarily unsafe. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Prague New Town.
Mala Strana and Castle District (Hradcany) – Prague 1
Mala Strana, otherwise known as the Lesser Quarter, is on the opposite side of the Charles bridge from the Old Town, and just below Prague Castle. It is a beautiful historic area that can be very touristy and busy during the day on its main streets, but also quiet as you explore further and at night. So although I wouldn’t love to stay right on the main road coming off Charles Bridge, there are many beautiful parts of Mala Strana that make it one of the best areas to stay in Prague. Beautiful buildings line cobblestone streets. It is super central, walking distance to Prague Castle and Prague Old Town. Mala Strana is our pick for where to stay in Prague for history and to be close to attractions yet still quiet at night.
The Castle District, Hradcany, is obviously the area surrounding Prague Castle. It is beautiful and some luxury hotels can be found around here. It can be a little hilly, and a little further away from the Old Town, but still quite central. It is a great place to stay if you are looking for a peaceful neighbourhood. Mala Strana and the Castle District would be our pick for the best places to stay in Prague for couples. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Mala Strana and the Castle District.
The Best Areas To Stay In Prague For A Second Trip, Longer Stays Or A Local Feel
All of these neighbourhoods are beautiful but perhaps slightly further away from the main sights of Prague. They all have access to public transport that can easily get you where you need to be. These neighbourhoods were some of our favourite for where to stay in Prague for a local feel or for longer stays.
Vysehrad – Prague 2
Vysehrad is a beautiful neighbourhood where you will also find the stunning Vysehrad Fortress (and the amazing views from there over Prague) and Naplavka farmers markets on Saturday morning. It’s a little further away from the main sights whilst still being in Prague city centre and connected by tram and metro. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Vysehrad.
Vinohrady – Prague 2
Vinohrady is a beautiful and trendy residential neighbourhood, that is still quite central. Its connected by metro and tram to other areas of Prague. Stay in this area if you want a local feel with parks, cafes and restaurants. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Vinohrady.
Karlin – Prague 8
We absolutely loved the Karlin neighbourhood in Prague. Although it has a rough past, it’s a beautiful tree-lined neighbourhood with an amazing food scene. Its also only about a 20 to 35 minute walk to the Old Town depending what part of Karlin you stay in. Otherwise, it’s also connected to the Old Town and other areas by tram and metro. Karlin is our pick for where to stay in Prague for food experiences and a local feel. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Karlin.
Letna – Prague 7
Letna is an up-and-coming neighbourhood that has some great cafes and restaurants, and of course, Letna Park. It’s a little further away from the main sights, with the closest one being Prague Castle, but there is a tram to help get you around. A great neighbourhood for a local feel, cafes, and to escape the crowds and tourists. See our Prague accommodation guides below for the best hotels in Letna.
Booking Accommodation In Prague
When booking accommodation in Prague, there are two main websites that I use.
Booking.com
Booking.com has some of the best prices and a large number of accommodation options available. We love using it for our travels.

I love seeing what’s available from Airbnb, from getting to stay with a local host or having your own place to yourself, there’s something for everyone.
